Hardwood Floor Slip Tongue. Spline, or slip tongue, fits into the groove of hardwood flooring so direction of nailing can be reversed. When you nail the spline it has to maintain the correct angle or it may dip down and the next row will be hard to fit together.

Hardwood flooring splines are used to change direction for wood flooring that is nailed down. Change direction of flooring (starting installation in the middle of a room) interlock boarders. We make our hardwood flooring spline (slip tongue) out of poplar, to fit 3/4 thick solid, hardwood flooring that has 1/4 tongue and groove (nofma standard).
